It’s Always Hot in Augusta, GA by Degan Cheek

Summer in Augusta is a problem. You learn to survive it, but barely. The sun is mean, cruel and nasty—punishing everyone for just being under it. When parking lots start to ripple in the heat and cicadas are so loud you can’t hear yourself think, you know you’re in the thick of it. The humidity turns your clothing into wet bread. Car seats burn your skin. In South Augusta, the heat rolling in from Phinizy Swamp leaves the air sticky and sour. Everything feels like it’s about to melt. You probably complained about the mugginess today. Augusta’s record high has hit 108°F twice—so far. This is my ode to our shared cruel mistress: the Southern fever dream that is summer in Augusta.
